University of Missouri – Columbia (MIZZOU) has appointed Dr. Alexander Cartwright chancellor. Currently Dr. Cartwright is provost and executive vice president of the State University of New York System Office (SUNY). He will assume his new position as chancellor in August 2017.

Due to dropping enrollment numbers the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou) is expected to cut about 400 positions. Most of the cuts would be through attrition, retirement or non-renewal of non-tenured faculty contracts. Mizzou has been asked to cut about 8 to 12 percent of its budget.
Dr. Subra Suresh, president of Carnegie Mellon University, will step down June 30, 2017. He has been president since 2013. Prior to his presidency Dr. Suresh was director of the National Science Foundation. Carnegie Mellon Board Chairman James E. Rohr announced that an interim president will be named later this month.
CEO of Utah Health Care Vivian Lee and University president David Pershing fired the director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Mary Beckerle, this past April causing high tensions with staff and faculty. Beckerle was reinstated and Dr. Vivian Lee resigned. President Pershing named Dr. Lorris Betz as interim CEO to replace Dr. Lee.
Dr. Kristina M. Johnson will be the new chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY) effective September 5, 2017. She will replace Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher who steps down in June. An interim chancellor will be appointed for the June – August gap by the SUNY board at its June 21st meeting.
Holly Cross College (HCC) Vice President Kelly Jordan inadvertently sent a negative finance related email to the student body. The email mentioned “closing down the College” according to the South Bend Tribune. Soon after, HCC interim president Rev. David Tyson sent an email to the college stating that Kelly Jordan was no longer with the college.
University of Phoenix Board of Trustees appointed Peter Cohen as the university’s next president. Mr Cohen has more than 20 years experience in education. He succeeds Dr. Timothy Slottow who stepped down in March 2017.
The dean of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications has chosen to let its accreditation lapse. According to Medill’s dean, Dr. Bradley Hamm, the accreditation process is “flawed”. He said about the review process “It’s sort of a low bar.” Medill will no longer be accredited after this school year.
Dr. Timothy Meyer, chancellor of Oakland Community College (OCC), was placed on administrative leave without explanation on Tuesday, May 19th. The OCC board voted 5 to 1 to remove Meyer from office. According to Meyer’s lawyer Raymond Cotton, Meyer does not know why he was dismissed. The OCC board has named vice president of administrative services Peter Provenzano as interim chancellor.
Dr. Thomas Pleger, president of Lake Superior State University, died Sunday, May 15, two days after undergoing brain surgery. Interim Provost David Finley has been named to take over day to day operations of the university.
Dr. Linda A. Livingstone was named as Baylor University’s 15th president. She will be the first female president in Baylor’s 172-year history. Currently Dr. Livingstone is dean and professor of management at The George Washington University. She starts in her new position on June 1.
The UC Board of Regents has confirmed Carol Christ as UC Berkeley’s 11th Chancellor. Ms. Christ is currently serving as Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at UC Berkeley. She will assume her new position effective July 1, 2017. Ms. Christ will be succeeding current Chancellor Nicholas Dirks who steps down June 30th.
