University of Nebraska System Names Potential President

Walter E. Carter Jr. has been announced as the priority candidate to become the next president of the University of Nebraska System. Carter has spent the past five years as superintendent of the U.S. Naval academy. Nebraska Board of Regents will review for the next 30 days, after which Carter will most likely become president.

Northern Virginia CC Announces New President

Current president of Monroe Community College in Rochester, Dr. Anne Kress, has been named the next president at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Kress has served as leader at Monroe CC since 2009. She will begin her tenure at NOVA in January.

Robeson CC Names Next Leader

Melissa Singler has been announced to become the next president of Robeson Community College by the NC State Board of Community Colleges. Robeson is currently the Executive VP at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC. She will become the school’s 6th president on November 1st.

Conston to Become New President of TideWater CC

Marcia Conston has been named the next president of Tidewater Community College. Conston beat out nearly 80 applicants for the top position and said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the esteemed TCC faculty and staff, as well as, engage with educational, business and industry partners.” She will begin in January.

Virginia Highlands CC Announces New President

Current provost of Texas State Technical College Waco, Dr. Adam C. Hutchison, has been named the next president at Virginia Highlands Community college. Dr. Hutchison will begin as president in January.

Wright State Provost Promoted to President, Schrader to Retire

Current provost at Wright State University, Susan Edwards, has been named its next president. Edwards will take over for Cheryl Schrader, who plans to retire at the end of December. Edwards said, “We have so much going for us. We are committed to providing a high quality, high outcome education.” She will begin her tenure in January

Cal State University System Chancellor to Retire

Dr. Timothy P. White, chancellor of the California State University System, has announced his plan to retire at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. White has served as chancellor of the U.S.’s largest public university system since 2012. CSU Board of Trustees announced they will begin a search for a successor immediately.

University of Wisconsin System President Announces Retirement

After five years at the helm, President Ray Cross has announced his retirement from the University Wisconsin System. Cross said, “I hope that folks will remember me as an advocate for higher education and someone who believes strongly in the value of higher education – its role in our society, its role in our economy and its value individually.” Cross will stay until UW Board of Regents secure a replacement.

Berklee College of Music President to Step Down

President Roger H. Brown has announced his plan to step down as leader of Berklee, effective in May of 2021. Brown has served the school since 2004 and is the institution’s 3rd president.

Resignation at Blackburn College

Blackburn College President, Julie Murray-Jensen, has resigned from Blackburn College. Murray-Jensen served for nine months. According to The State Journal Register, it is not clear whether Murray-Jensen was forced out or not.

Cal Lutheran President Stepping Down

After twelve years at the helm, Chris Kimball is stepping down as president of California Lutheran University. Kimball said, “After twelve years as president, I think it is time for a change and for someone with a fresh perspective to lead Cal Lutheran into its very bright future.” He plans to leave at the end of this academic year.

New President Appointed at South Carolina

Former president of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Bob Caslen, has been named the next president at South Carolina. The appointment has been controversial as South Carolina’s Governor McMaster stepped in and forced a vote on Caslen while students and faculty were away from school. Caslen will start on August 1st as USC’s 29th president.

Concordia St. Paul Announces Next President

Rev. Brian Friedrich has been selected as the next president at St. Paul’s Concordia University. Friedrich currently serves as president of Concordia Nebraska. He will become the school’s 10th president on January 1st.

Edward Wingenbach has been announced as the new president of Hampshire College in Massachusetts. Wingenbach currently serves as acting president of Ripon College in Wisconsin. He will be the College’s eighth leader.

Provost Promoted at the University of Missouri St. Louis

Pending approval by the University of Missouri Board, Dr. Kristin Sobolik will become the interim chancellor at UM – St. Louis. Sobolik is currently the acting provost and executive vice chancellor at the school. She will take over until a new, permanent chancellor is found.

Interim President Named at St. John’s University

Dr. Eugene McAllister has been announced as interim president by the St. John’s University Board of Trustees. McAllister will replace Michael Hemesath, who announced his resignation on August 1st after seven years at the school.

Stephen F. Austin Names New President

The Board at Stephen F. Austin State has named Dr. Scott Gordon as sole finalist for president. Gordon currently serves as provost for Eastern Washington University. If confirmed by regents of the state, Gordon will become president this fall.

Bismarck State College President Announces Retirement

President Larry C. Skogen has announced his plans to retire in June of 2020. Skogen was the school’s sixth president and has served the college for the past twelve years.

Paine College President Retires, Acting President Announced

Dr. Jerry Hardee has announced, due to health problems, his retirement as president of Paine College. Hardee plans to stay on to “render support throughout the transition” as current provost, Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, will become acting president.

Dubois to Retire from UNC Charlotte

Effective next June, Chancellor Philip Dubois will retire from UNC Charlotte. Dubois has served as chancellor for the past fifteen years. The school has grown 43 percent since Dubois became its leader in 2005.

Auburn University President Resigns

After two years at the helm, Auburn University President Dr. Steven Leath has suddenly stepped down as president. Leath and members of the board of trustees’ presidential assessment group decided on the decision.

President Steps Down at Hollins University, Interim Announced

Hollins’ University President Pareena Lawrence has resigned from her position citing “interest in international education and development.” Lawrence served as president for the past two years. Retired Hollins University President Nancy Oliver Gray has been appointed interim president for the upcoming school year, starting on August 12.

Mount Union President Resigns

President Richard Merriman Jr. has announced that he will resign as president at the end of the 2019-20 school year. Merriman has served as Mount Union President for the past 2 years. A search for the university’s 13th president will begin shortly.

Rutgers University President to Step Down

President Robert Barchi has announced his plan to resign as Rutgers University President at the end of the 2020 school year. Barchi plans to take a year’s sabbatical and return as a professor. He said, “I am very excited about where Rutgers is now.”

The Board of Regents for the Georgia University System has announced that current George Mason President, Dr. Angel Cabrera, will become the next president at George Tech. Cabrera has served as President at George Mason since 2012. He will begin his position at Georgia Tech on September 15hth.

Bennett College Names New President

Suzanne Walsh has been approved by the Board of Trustees at Bennett College to become the school’s next president. Walsh has previously held leadership roles at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Lumina Foundation. She will replace Phyllis Dawkins, who resigned, this August.

Current president of Miles College, George T. French Jr., has been announced as the next president of Clark Atlanta University. He has served as president at Miles college since 2006. He will replace Ronald Johnson this September.

Former Virginia Secretary of Education, Anne Holton, has been voted to become George Mason’s interim president. Holton said, “George Mason University is a special place for me and my family, and I look forward to serving the institution during this interim period.” Holton will replace current President Angel Cabrera who is leaving for the head spot at Georgia Tech in September.

The Board of Goucher College has approved Kent Devereaux to become the college’s next president. Deveraux currently serves as the president of New Hampshire Institute of Art. He will become Goucher’s twelfth president in July.

Grambling State Announces Former Senator as Next leader

Former Louisiana state senator, Richard Gallot Jr., has been approved to become the next president at Grambling State University. Gallot is a former GSU graduate and will begin his tenure immediately.

Provost Promoted to President at La Sierra U

Dr. Joy Fehr, current La Sierra provost, has been elected by university trustees to become the school’s next president. Fehr replaces President Randal Wisbey, who retired at the end of June. Dr. Fehr will begin immediately.

New Chancellor Named at Denver

Jeremy Haefner has been named the University of Denver’s 19th Chancellor. Haefner previously served as the university’s provost and executive vice chancellor. He will replace current Chancellor Rebecca Chop, who announced that she will be resigning do to “serious health concerns.” Haefner will begin on July 15th.

McKendree University President to Retire

Dr. James Dennis, president of McKendree University for the last 25 years, has announced his retirement from the school. McKendree will officially retire in June of 2020.

Rosemont College President Announces Retirement

President Sharon Latchaw Hirsh has announced that she will retire as president of Rosemont College. Hirsch has served as the college’s leader since 2006. Hirsch said, “I just think it’s a good time.” She will officially retire in May of 2020.

Hollins University President to Resign

Hollins’ President Pareena Lawrence has announced that she will resign from the University citing her interest in international education and development. Lawrence has served as Hollins’ president since 2016.

The Taylor University Board of Trustees has announced that Taylor University President, Paul Haines, will resign from the school in August. Haines has served the school for the past three years.

Former Governor Appointed Head of University of Maine System

Dannell Malloy, governor of Connecticut from 2010 to 2018, will become the next chancellor of the University of Maine System. Malloy will replace Chancellor James Page, who announced his retirement earlier this year, on July 1st.

New President Named at Edinboro University

Guiyou Huang has been selected by the Board of Governor’s of Pennsylvania to become the next president of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Huang currently serves as chancellor for Louisiana State University of Alexandria. He will begin his tenure at Edinboro on July 1st.

Sorenson Announced as Chancellor at LSU Eunice

Current president at Hillsborough CC, Nancee Sorenson, has been named the next president at LSU Eunice. She said, “It’s a true honor to be selected as the new leader of LSU Eunice and work under the direction of such a tremendous president as Dr. King Alexander.” Sorenson will begin her leadership upon approval from the Board of Supervisors.

Lynn Mahoney has been named the next president at SFSU by the California State University Board of Trustees. Mahoney is the current provost at Cal State Los Angeles. She will become the 14th president at SFSU on July 15th.

SUNY Empire State Names Next President

Dr. Jim Malatras has been approved by the SUNY board of Trustees to become the next president at SUNY Empire state. Malatras currently serves as the president of Rockefeller Institute of Government, and will become the fifth Empire State president this summer.

Former president of Newbury College, Joseph L. Chillo, has been announced as Thomas More University’s next president. Chillo said, “It is a great honor and my distinct privilege to be selected to serve as Thomas More University’s 15th president.” He will begin his tenure on June 1st.

Current University of Wyoming VP for Finance and Administration, Neil Theobald, has been chosen to become new acting president. Theobald will replace current President Laurie Nichols on July 1st.

Oklahoma President to Retire After One Year

University of Oklahoma president, Jim Gallogly, will retire after only one year of leading the institution. Gollogly said, “(My wife) Janet and I have been honored to serve our university.” Gollogly’s term as president has been marred with controversies. He will officially leave the school once a transition for a successor has been put in place.

Centre College President John Roush has announced his plans to retire from Centre College after 22 years at the helm. Roush said, “Our plan is to finish strong and keep working hard up to the very last day.” He plans to officially retire on June 30th, 2020.

Depauw President Announces Resignation

President D. Mark McCoy has announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. McCoy said, “I have loved my time at Depauw as dean and president.” McCoy has served as the school’s leader since 2016. The Board has begun a national search for a replacement.

Darrell to Resign from Kentucky Wesleyan

Barton D. Darrell has announced his plan to retire as president from Kentucky Wesleyan this June 1st. Darrell has served as the school’s 34th president since September 2014.

Portland State President Resigns

President Rahmat Shoureshi has resigned as president from Portland State University. Shoureshi led the school for the past 21 months, but fell out of favor with trustees who questioned his ability to lead the institution.

Trustees for the University of Alabama System have appointed Interim Chancellor Finis E. St. John to become the system’s permanent chancellor. St. John has served in an interim position since July 2018. He will begin his post immediately.

Dr. Marlen Tromp has been named by the Idaho State Board of Education to become the next president at Boise State University. Tromp currently serves as provost at UC Santa Cruz. She will become the school’s first female president on July 1st.

Dr. Jacqueline Gill has been announced as the next president at Danville State Community College. Gill will succeed Dr. Bruce Scism who retired in December of 2018. She will begin her tenure this July.

John W. Wells has been unanimously approved by the board at Emory & Henry to become the institution’s next president. Wells currently serves as provost and will replace Jake Schrum as Emory & Henry’s 22nd president this July.

Current president and CEO of Kankakee College, John Avendano, has been announced the next president of Florida State College at Jacksonville. Avendano will replace Interim President Kevin Hyde immediately.

Alicia Harvey-Smith has been selected to become the next leader of Pittsburgh Technical College. Harvey-Smith currently acts as executive vice chancellor at Lone Star College in Houston. She will replace Interim President Eileen Steffan this July.

Chancellor Tom George has announced his retirement from the University of Missouri St. Louis. George has served the school for the past 16 years and said “It has been the greatest experience of my professional life to serve as chancellor of UMSL and to represent the students, faculty, staff and alumni in our efforts alongside numerous community and business organizations.”

Vanderbilt Chancellor to Step Aside

Citing health concerns, Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos has announced his resignation. Zeppos will leave as the school’s leader in August and said, “I truly love Vanderbilt and serving you has been a privilege.” He will stay on as a law professor at the university.

Dr. Mariko Silver has announced that she will resign on July 1st to take over the Henry Luce Foundation in New York. Dr. Silver has served as president of Bennington since 2013.

Current Macalester College President Brian Rosenberg has announced that he intends to resign in May of 2020. Rosenberg has led the school for the past 16 years. He said, “I have made a promise to myself from day one that I try not to outstay my welcome.”

Dr. Barbara Mistick has announced her plan to resign from Wilson College at the end of the 2019 school year. Wilson has served the college since 2011 and said, “I am very proud of my time at Wilson College and the work we have accomplished together.” The board has appointed a committee to find its successor.

Carol L. Folt has been selected by the USC Board of Trustees to become the school’s 12th president. Folt previously served as the first female chancellor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She will begin her tenure at USC on July 1st.

Colorado State Announces New President

CSU has announced that current provost and VP for academic affairs at West Virginia University, Joyce McConnell, will become the institutions next president. McConnell will replace President Tony Frank on July 1st. She is the first female president in CSU’s history.

Board of Regents at Murray State have named current interim president, Dr. Bob Jackson, to become the institutions permanent leader. Jackson became interim president last August. He became the 14th president on March 1st.

President Jay Barnes has announced his plans to retire from the university. Barnes has served as president since July of 2008. President Barnes said, “It has been a blessing and one of my life’s greatest joys to serve and be part of the Bethel community.” His last day will be June 30th 2020.

Kevin Guskiewicz has been named interim chancellor at UNC. Guskiewicz was appointed by Interim UNC-system President Bill Roper earlier this month. Guskiewicz has served as the dean of College of Arts and Sciences at UNC since 2016. He will begin his tenure as interim chancellor immediately.

Christopher Malloy has been named the new, permanent president at Rutgers University New Brunswick. Malloy has served as interim president since this summer and previously as senior VP for research and economic development at the institution. He will begin his permanent tenure immediately.

Following the resignation of Dale Whittaker in mid-February, Thad Seymour Jr. has been named president of the University of Central Florida. Seymour Jr. previously served as VP for partnerships and chief innovation officer at UCF.

Eckerd College President to Retire

Donald R. Eastman III has announced that he will retire as president from Eckerd College. Eastman has served for the past 18 years and will leave in the summer of 2020. A search committee has been contracted to find his replacement.

Current Skidmore College President, Philip Glotzbach, has announced that he will retire in May of 2020. Glotzbach has served the school since 2003.

Libby to Retire from Stetson

Wendy Libby has announced her retirement from Stetson University in Florida. Libby has served as president of the school for the past decade. She said, “I’m very proud of the way we have been able to grow enrollment at a time that has not always been hospitable for private education, including law education.” Libby plans to serve as an advisor under the board’s request upon retirement.

University of Mobile President Resigns

President Timothy Smith informed the Board of Trustees at the University of Mobile of his resignation last month. Smith has served as president since 2016 and cited personal reasons for departing. Plans to ensure a smooth transition are currently being finalized by the Board of Trustees.

Michigan State Names New President

The Board at Michigan State has named current executive VP for administrative services, Satish Upda, to become the institution’s new interim president. Upda will replace John Engler who resigned after learning the board was scheduled to fire him. Upda said, “I recognize it’s a challenge but at the end of the day this is a job that needs to get done. We can’t continue to operate the way we’ve been for the past two years.”

Allegheny College Elects Next Leader

Hilary Link has been unanimously elected to become Allegheny College’s next president. Link currently serves as dean of Temple University’s campus in Rome. She replaces James Mullen Jr. who is retiring in June after 11 years at the helm.

President Selected at Alvernia University

Current VP for business affairs and CFO at King’s College, John Loyack, has been announced as the next leader of Alvernia University. Loyack said, “I look forward to continuing the success and growth of Alvernia and ensuring that this institution is well positioned to deliver is transformational mission to students for generations to become.” He will begin his tenure on July 1st.

Interim President Named After Resignation at Bluefield State

Following the resignation of Dr. Marsha Krotseng in December, the Board at Bluefield state has selected Robin Capehart as the school’s interim president. Capehart previously ran Georgetown Solutions, a higher education consulting firm.

Brooklyn Law School Appoints Next President

Effective on July 1st, Michael T. Cahill will take over as Brooklyn Law School’s president. Cahill formerly served on the faculty Brooklyn Law for 13 years. He will replace Interim Dean Maryellen Fullerton in July.

Dr. Lisa Chapman has been selected the sixth president of Central Carolina Community College. Dr. Chapman currently serves as senior VP and provost for the North Carolina Community College System. She will begin as president on April 1st.

Georgia Southern Names New President

Board of Regents at GA Southern have announced Dr. Kyle Marrero as the school’s next president. Marrero currently serves as president of West Georgia. He will replace Interim President Shelley Nickel on April 1st.

Grand Valley State Appoints First Female President

Board of Trustees at Grand Valley State have appointed Philomena Mantella to become the university’s next leader. Dr. Mantella is currently at Northeastern University, serving as senior VP and CEO of the Lifelong Learning Network there. She replaces President Thomas Haas who is retiring this June.

Monmouth University Announces 10th President

Patrick F. Leahy has been announced as the 10th president at Monmouth University. Leahy currently serves as Wilkes University’s President, where he has been since 2012. He will begin his leadership at Monmouth in August, succeeding Grey Dimenna.

The Board at Quincy University has appointed Brian Mcgee as the institution’s next president. McGee currently serves as provost at the College of Charleston. He will succeed Acting President Phil Conover this July.

Current president of Iona College, Joseph Nyre, has been announced the next president at Seaton Hall University. Nyre will remain at Iona before transferring to Seton Hall on August 1st. He has served at Iona College for the past eight years.

Former Leader of North Carolina’s Community College System, Scott Ralls, has been named the future president of Wake Tech CC. Ralls is currently serving as president at NOVA Community College. He will replace Dr. Stephen Scott in May of 2019.

Retirements

Georgia Tech President to Step Down

Georgia Tech President G.P. “Bud” Peterson has announced his plan to retire at the end of the 2019 school year. Peterson has served the school for the past 10 years. In the last year, his tenure was scarred by investigations into ethics abuse by former administrators and the handling of students’ mental health problems. Peterson said, “Being able to be president of Georgia Tech over the past decade has been one of the highlights of my career.” A national search for a replacement will be conducted by Georgia’s University System.

Clark University President to Retire

After nine years, Clark President David Angel has announced his plans to retire in June of 2020. Clark Board of Trustees have announced a search for a replacement in the near future.

Longtime Queen’s University President Announces Retirement

Dr. Pamela Davies will retire as the 20th president of Queens University this summer. Serving since 2002, Davies said, “I have considered it a great privilege to lead this university over the last 16 years.” She will be succeeded by Daniel Lugo, current VP for college advancement at Colby College this July.

UNC Chancellor Resigns

UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt has resigned from her leadership role at the institution. Citing a series of turbulent events, she said, “my heart is full.” Her resignation came on the same day that she ordered the base of the controversial Silent Sam Statue to be removed. Accrediting issues and collegiate athlete scandals have also marred Folt’s tenure. A decision on Folt’s replacement will be made by Interim UNC system President Bill Roper this month.
